  Refining Your Vision:
  The face of Cusco

   May 20th - 26th, 2008

"I only know how to approach a place by walking. For what does a street photographer do but walk and watch and wait and talk, and then watch and wait some more, trying to remain confident that the unexpected, the unknown, or the secret heart of the known awaits just around the corner."  Alex Webb

This workshop is hosted by the energized town of Cusco, using the camera to explore the world of this remarkable city in a direct, spontaneous way.  It is a workshop that will emphasize the development of a unique, personal way of seeing, while finding your inspiration and refining your vision.  The workshop is open to amateurs and professionals alike.

There are two basic components of this class:  the spontaneous act of photographing and the subsequent editing.  The workshop will begin with Alex and Rebecca, a creative team who often edit projects and books together, who will critique students’ past work. (Please bring about 30 images -- prints, slides, or digital files.  Alex and Rebecca encourage those who work in series to bring a selection of photographs from two or three series or an excerpt from a long-term project.)

By that first afternoon, students will be out working on their first assignment, which students will choose themselves. We will help those who are undecided about what to photograph. It may be a specific street, market, plaza, neighborhood, subculture, profession, family or individual; something that you're passionate enough to return to every day to photograph.

The optional 3-day excursion to Machu Picchu and The Sacred Valley will be roundtrip transport on VistaDome class train service on the Orient Express; our own photographic guide and regional expert, Max Milligan, will accompany us during our time in Machu Picchu with thorough historical and architectural knowledge of the site. We will stop for an overnight in the preserved Incan town of Ollantaytambo on the way back to Cusco.
