While mostly unstructured in a temporal sense, this will be one of the more intense workshops mentally. We will delve deep into what it means to immerse oneself and understand one’s vision within a specific space or assignment. Stella is not just an exceptional photographer, she is a master of language and place, of story and idea, project and vision. You will come away with a much richer understanding of your own inspirations and creativity.
We will meet in the mornings and critique as a group each student’s ongoing work. We will also have brief meetings at the end of the day to discuss some of the daily problems that have emerged, and some group dinners in Cusco. The rest of the time we should be prepared to be out photographing in Cusco, refining one’s vision, practicing your project.
Throughout the workshop, we will try to build a coherent set of images for each photographer that will begin to represent his or her photographic stance or attitude toward the world of Cusco. We will view this work as a group at the end of the workshop.
Significant emphasis will be placed on the relationship between subject and photographer. Stella will also explore with the class a series of topics, including the challenges of working in a different culture, the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; and how long-term projects evolve into books and exhibitions.
